Zwei Jahre nach Erscheinen der Graphic Novel 'Der Staub der Ahnen' und fast zehn Jahre nach Arbeitsbeginn an dem aufwändigen Buchprojekt kehrt der Berliner Künstler Felix Pestemer an den Ort zurück, der ihn damals zu seinem Comic-Album über den 'Tag der Toten' und die Alltagskultur Mexikos inspirierte: Das Museo de Arte Popular (Museum für Volkskunst) im Herzen von Mexiko Stadt. Jetzt wird seiner Arbeit dort anlässlich des Día de Muertos, des größten mexikanischen Feiertages, eine große Sonderausstellung gewidmet.

Was hat ein deutscher Künstler in einem Museum für mexikanische Volkskunst verloren?
Wer mit der Graphic Novel in der Hand durch die Hallen des Museo de Arte Popular (MAP) flaniert, findet bald Antwort: Tanzende Skelette, Masken, Votivbilder, Altar-Objekte, Scherenschnitte ... Zahlreiche Details in den Illustrationen des Comics entstammen der Sammlung des MAP und sind von der reichen Alltagskultur Mexikos inspiriert. Sie geben der Erzählung über die Lebenden und die Toten einer Familie und ihre Verflechtungen weit über den Tod hinaus ein unverwechselbares Ambiente, in dem sich Felix Pestemer sichtlich wohl fühlt. Für ihn ist 'Der Staub der Ahnen' eine Hommage an die Volkskunst und an die Kulturgeschichte Mexikos.
Neun Ausstellungen mit den großformatigen Original-Zeichnungen aus dem Buch gab es bislang in Europa zu sehen, und doch bietet die zehnte, die Sonderausstellung 'El Polvo de los antepasados – Una novela gráfica sobre la muerte en México' im MAP, erstaunlich viel Neues: Neben mehr als 50 Original-Illustrationen, Skizzenbüchern und einem breiten Fundus an Quellenmaterialien wird erstmals auch der Animationsfilm 'Peyotl' gezeigt. Motion Grafiker Max von Bock animierte dafür Bilder aus dem furiosen Finale von 'Der Staub der Ahnen' - ein Drogenrausch, der den Betrachterin das Reich der Azteken entführt und von dort direkt ins Fegefeuer. Der Musiker Tim Kroker versah 'Peyotl' mit Sound und eindringlicher elektronischer Musik. Die Sprecher Lino Santacruz Moctezuma und Fabián García Herrera liehen den Figuren Don Reyes und Juanito ihre Stimmen.
Im Ausstellungskatalog werden die Leser nicht nur die vollständige Graphic Novel in mexikanischer Mundart vorfinden, sondern obendrein einen ausführlichen Artikel von Co-Kurator Jurek Sehrt über den mexikanischen Totenkult und den Synkretismus von indigenen Religionen und Katholizismus als künstlerische Inspiration. Diverse Grafiken und Poster vorangegangener Ausstellungen Pestemers illustrieren den Text und offenbaren, dass die Bilderwelt um den 'Tag der Toten' den Künstler noch weit über seine Graphic Novel hinaus in den Bann gezogen hat. Bei Pestemer wird die massive Symbolik des Magischen Realismus zugleich gefeiert und karikiert, werden plakative Motive in Kombination mit absurden Artefakten umgedeutet oder durch ein morbides Ambiente gebrochen.
Doch die Besucher der Ausstellung im MAP erwartet noch ein weiteres Highlight, denn die Auswahl der gezeigten Originale wurde aus gegebenem Anlass erweitert: Nur wenige Meter vom Museum entfernt befindet sich das berühmte Wandgemälde Una tarde dominical en la Alameda Central von Diego Rivera. Und inmitten der auf diesem Wandgemälde dargestellten Menschenmenge treffen wir auf eine der Hauptfiguren aus 'Der Staub der Ahnen', ein kleines Mädchen namens Dolores mit ihrer Puppe, das sich im Buch beim Versteckspiel im benachbarten 'Parque de la Alameda Central' durch eben jene Menschenmenge ihren Weg bahnt. Wer die Sequenzen aus dem Comic mit Riveras Bild vergleicht, stellt fest, dass offensichtlich nur wenige Sekunden zwischen den beiden Szenen liegen. (Diego Rivera tritt in diesem Rückblick ins Jahr 1937 selbst als „Komparse“ auf. Während er der Schauspielerin Maria Félix den Hof macht, trifft sich Ehefrau Frida Kahlo heimlich mit dem Exilanten Leo Trotzki.)

So oder ähnlich zieht sich das durch das ganze Buch: Orte, Personen, historische Fakten werden zitiert, Bräuche und Objekte aus verschiedenen Epochen und Regionen Mexikos in die fiktive Erzählung eingebaut. Felix Pestemer hat gründlich recherchiert und sich am Ende alle künstlerische Freiheiten genommen. Für die mexikanischen Besucher der Ausstellung gibt es so eine Menge Altbekanntes zu entdecken, das durch fremde Augen gesehen in ganz neuem Licht betrachtet werden kann.

Dos años después de la aparición de la novela gráfica 'El polvo de los antepasados' y casi diez años posteriores al comienzo del trabajo en el ambicioso proyecto del libro, regresa el artista berlinés Felix Pestemer al lugar que le inspiró para la realización de su Cómic sobre el Día de los Muertos, la vida en México y su cultura. Este lugar es el Museo de Arte Popular, ubicado en el corazón de la Ciudad de México; y ahora es en este recinto donde se le dedica una exposición especial a su obra, en conmemoración a la gran festividad mexicana del Día de los Muertos.
¿Qué busca un artista alemán en un museo de arte popular mexicano?
Quien se pasee por las salas del Museo de Arte Popular (MAP) con su novela gráfica en las manos, encontrará la respuesta: Esqueletos danzantes, máscaras, ofrendas votivas, objetos de altares, papel picado... Innumerables detalles en las ilustraciones del comic proceden de la colección del MAP y están inspirados en la riqueza cultural de México. Estos detalles le dan un ambiente singular al relato que trata sobre los vivos y los difuntos de una familia, así como sus vínculos e interdependencia más allá de la muerte. Felix Pestemer se siente evidentemente cómodo en este entorno, para él, 'El polvo de los antepasados' es un homenaje al arte popular y a la historia cultural de México.
Nueve exposiciones con los dibujos originales de la novela en gran formato se han podido apreciar hasta ahora en Europa, sin embargo la décima, la exposición especial 'El polvo de los antepasados – Una novela gráfica sobre la muerte en México' en el MAP, sorprende con muchas novedades. Paralelamente a las más de cincuenta ilustraciones originales, bocetos y un amplio fondo de material de referencia, se presentará por primera vez el cortometraje de animación 'Peyotl'. El diseñador gráfico Max von Bock animó las ilustraciones del apasionante final del cómic; un delirio narcótico que rapta a los espectadores, llevándolos al reino de los aztecas y desde ahí directamente hacia el purgatorio. El Músico Tim Kroker proveyó a 'Peyotl' de sonido y una música electrónica sugestiva. Los locutores Lino Santacruz Moctezuma y Fabián García Herrera le dieron sus voces a los personajes de Don Reyes y Juanito.
Los lectores encontrarán en el catálogo de la exposición, además de la novela gráfica completa en el habla de México, un artículo detallado del Co-curador Jurek Sehrt sobre el culto mexicano a la muerte y el sincretismo de las religiones indígenas y el catolicismo como inspiración artística. Diversas ilustraciones y posters de exposiciones anteriores de Pestemer ilustran el texto y ponen de manifiesto su fascinación por el mundo de imágenes que rodean al Día de los Muertos, que se refleja más allá de su novela gráfica. Pestemer celebra y caricaturiza al mismo tiempo el fuerte simbolismo del realismo mágico, los motivos vistosos en combinación con artefactos absurdos son reinterpretados o refractados a través de un ambiente mórbido.
Pero además, a los visitantes de la exposición en el MAP les espera algo digno de destacar, pues la selección de los originales expuestos ha sido ampliada especialmente para esta ocasión. A pocos metros de distancia del museo, se encuentra el famoso mural Sueño de una tarde dominical en la Alameda Central de Diego Rivera. En medio del gentío representado en este mural encontramos a un personaje central de 'El polvo de los antepasados', la niña llamada Dolores con su muñeca que, jugando a las escondidas en el vecino “Parque de la Alameda Central” se abre camino a través de esa cantidad de gente. Si se comparan las secuencias de esta escena del cómic con las de la pintura de Rivera, se hace evidente que solamente transcurren algunos segundos de diferencia entre las dos escenas. (Diego Rivera aparece en esta retrospección del año 1937 como comparsa y mientras le hace la corte a la actriz María Félix su esposa, Frida Kahlo, tiene un encuentro furtivo con el exiliado Leo Trotzki).
Así y de manera similar se desenvuelve todo a través del libro: Lugares, personas, hechos historicos, costumbres y objetos de diferentes épocas y regiones de México son incorporados en el relato ficticio. Felix Pestemer documentó con gran dedicación su obra y al final se tomó todas las libertades artísticas. Para los visitantes mexicanos de la exposición hay una gran cantidad de elementos ya conocidos por redescubrir, sin embargo, se pueden apreciar con una mirada nueva, a través de los ojos de un extranjero.

Exhibition at the Museo de Arte Popular in Mexico City
It has been two years since the publication of 'The Dust of the Ancestors' and close to ten years since Felix Pestemer embarked on the creative voyage of this intricate graphic novel project. Now, the Berlin-based artist returns to the scene of inspiration for his comic volume about the Day of the Dead and Mexican everyday culture: the Museo de Arte Popular (MAP, Museum of Popular Art) in the heart of Mexico City. Here, on the occasion of the central public event Día de los Muertos, Pestemer’s opus is acknowledged in an extensive special exhibition.
What business does a German artist have in a Mexican museum for popular art?
Taking a stroll through the halls of the MAP, Pestemer’s graphic novel in hand, one might get an idea: dancing skeletons, masks, votive pictures, papercuttings, … Numerous illustrative details of the comic derive from the MAP’s collections and are thus inspired by opulent Mexican everyday culture. Precisely these minutiae lend the distinctive atmosphere to the tale of the living and the dead members of a family and their interrelations far beyond death, an atmosphere Felix Pestemer obviously feels at ease with. For him, 'The Dust of the ancestors' constitutes an homage to Mexico’s cultural heritage and popular art.
So far, the large-format original drawings had been on display within nine exhibitions in Europe. Exhibition number ten is the MAP special exhibition 'El polvo de los antepasados – Una novela gráfica sobre la muerte en México', and many exhibits will be shown for the first time. Aside from more than 50 original drawings, sketchbooks and a wealth of source material, the animated film 'Peyotl' will premiere. Motion graphic artist Max von Bock has animated panels from the rousing finale of 'The Dust of the Ancestors' - a psychedelic trip which sweeps the reader away to purgatory via the Aztec Empire. 'Peyotl' is provided with sound and intense electronic music by Tim Kroker. Voice actors Lino Santacruz Moctezuma and Fabián García Herrera play the parts of protagonists Don Reyes and Juanito.
Not only does the exhibition catalog offer the entire graphic novel in Mexican Spanish, but also a detailed essay by co-curator Jurek Sehrt on Mexican mortuary cult and syncretism of indigenous religions and catholicism as sources of artistic inspiration. A variety of Pestemer’s graphic works and posters from previous exhibitions serve to further illustrate the text. These objects reveal how deeply the imagery surrounding the Day of the Dead has enthralled the artist, in an intensity which impacts his work beyond the graphic novel. In Pestemer’s work, the substantial symbolism of magic realism is celebrated and caricatured at the same time. Pithy motives are reinterpreted through juxtaposition with absurd artefacts or deconstructed through morbidity of setting.
Yet another highlight awaits to be discovered, since the selection of originals displayed has been expanded for the occasion: only meters away from the museum, Diego Rivera’s famous mural Sueño de una tarde dominical en la Alameda Central is on display. Amidst the crowd of people depicted in the wall painting, we recognize one of the protagonists of 'The Dust of the Ancestors': a little girl by the name of Dolores and her doll. In the novel – in the course of a game of hide-and-seek in the adjacent 'Parque de la Alameda Central' – she makes her way through precisely this gathering. When comparing the sequences of the comic and Rivera’s painting, one realizes that mere seconds have passed between the respective scenes. (In fact, Rivera has a cameo appearance in the graphic novel, where in a flashback to the year 1937, we witness the painter courting actress Maria Félix, while Diego’s wife Frida Kahlo treats herself to a furtive tête-à-tête with expatriate Leo Trotzki).
References and tributes in this vein continue throughout the novel: places, people, historical facts, traditions and objects from different eras and regions of Mexico become interwoven with the fictional narrative. Felix Pestemer has completed a thorough research job before allowing himself a maximum of artistic license. For its Mexican visitors, the exhibition hence gives the opportunity to view the long-familiar, seen through a stranger’s eyes, in a completely new light.
